Introduction Requirements Coursework

Coursework

Once the course begins, you can access coursework and assignments. The following provides a general overview of the structure of facilitated CALPRO online courses.

Assigned Activities

Although CALPRO online courses are not graded, you must complete assignments and course activities on time to demonstrate that you have mastered the course material.

If you anticipate a problem getting your work completed on time, consult with the course facilitator before the assignment is due.

Types of Assignments

Type of Assignment Description

Readings

Reading

Most readings are Microsoft Word or PDF files. You can read the documents online, save the files or print them. Some readings may be on external Web sites.

Video/Audio

Video/Audio

Some courses have embedded in them audio and video files.

Discussions

Discussions

After you read, listen to, or view information, you may be asked to post written comments or responses to questions in an asynchronous discussion forum. Your responses must be substantive; it is not appropriate simply to agree or disagree. Support your statements with references to facts, research, or real-life experiences. Other participants and the course facilitator may respond to your comments.

Group work

Group work

Small group work is one of the most effective ways to interact with others in your online course. Occasionally, your facilitator may assign you to a group to work with a few other participants or invite you to work with a small group. Although you are not required to meet face to face or in real time, your group will collaborate by e-mail, virtual chat or a discussion topic in an area the course facilitator designates especially for your group. Or, if the group agrees, you can meet in person or stay in touch by telephone.

Surveys/Quizzes

Surveys/Quizzes

You may be asked to take an online survey. Responses are confidential and are compiled and reported as group data, not by individual responses. Some courses have quizzes which do not get graded. The results of quizzes enable you and the course facilitator to assess your understanding of the subject matter.

Lesson Plans

Lesson Plans

A common CALPRO online course assignment is creating or adapting a lesson plan. This type of activity lets you put what you’ve learned into practice.

Field Work

Field Work

Some online courses may require a field-based project or task that you conduct at work—for example, an activity you do with your students.

Web sites

Web sites

The Internet offers many useful Web sites. CALPRO online courses will introduce you to many of these resources, which you may explore for class assignments.
